Dermatologists are specialist physicians who diagnose and treat diseases of the skin, hair and nails. They may work with children or adults, and treat skin diseases such as eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, acne and cold sores and more serious conditions, such as skin cancer. Most dermatologists are skin surgeons as well as physicians. They may perform some surgery as part of their role, including cosmetic procedures such as removing birthmarks, skin tags or moles. General practitioners (GPs) treat all common medical conditions and refer patients to hospitals and other medical services for urgent and specialist treatment. They focus on the health of the whole person combining physical, psychological and social aspects of care. GPs provide routine health care (e.g., physical examinations, immunizations) and assess and treat many different conditions, including illnesses and injuries. They often have regular, long-term patients and provide ongoing medical care to both male and female patients in all age groups.
