Anaesthetists care for patients by choosing the appropriate anaesthetics, monitoring their wellbeing during operations and painful procedures, supervising their recovery and providing further medical support if needed. Some anaesthetists also choose to specialise in caring for specific sorts of pain including pain in childbirth and long-term (or chronic) pain problems. They facilitate pain free child-birth, resuscitate acutely unwell patients, run chronic pain and lead intensive care units. Consultant in Pain Medicine specialises in the assessment, investigation and management of patients with acute and chronic pain, assess and assist in the management of patients with acute pain, also provides a service to the palliative care.
