Dermatologists are specialist physicians who diagnose and treat diseases of the skin, hair and nails. They may work with children or adults, and treat skin diseases such as eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, acne and cold sores and more serious conditions, such as skin cancer. Most dermatologists are skin surgeons as well as physicians. They may perform some surgery as part of their role, including cosmetic procedures such as removing birthmarks, skin tags or moles. Plastic surgeon performs reconstructive plastic surgery which restores form and function following illness or trauma. They also perform aesthetic or ‘cosmetic’ surgery which changes appearance or form. Specialist perform surgical treatment for congenital anomalies, breast deformities, upper and lower extremity problems, complex wounds, maxillofacial injuries, thermal burns, facial restoration, cosmetic enhancement.
